I want to purchase a stronger one made of billet aluminum with a urethane bushing. I read that without the flex that a stock carrier bearing has, that under hard shifts, I could actually break the billet carrier unless I use a slip joint rear. I never heard of a slip joint rear I have the original stock drive and want to know if I could use the billet aluminum with a urethane bushing without having a slip joint rear.

Thanks in advance. JPG I've just replaced my carrier bearing and all three uni joints. It was pretty easy job that was made easier because the carrier bearing yoke only going back on one way because there was a key way, so the front and rear yokes in the front shaft have to stay 90 degrees apart. The carrier bearing rubber was falling apart and 2 of the 3 U-joints appear to be originals and were pretty tired. One bearing was dry and the needles were squared off.

I replaced all uni's with Moog super strength and the carrier bearing was a stock one from Rockauto. Unfortunately it was chinese, so I hope it lasts, but it fitted fine and I don't flog this car so hopefully it'll last. They pushed the car out to the grid, fired it up, and pushed it back to the pits!

Page 1 of 2. When the billet center piece is new, it appears as though the bearing is solid in the piece but will soon loosen up and kind of slide back and forth. You should have no problems with it.

I seem to recall having heard some people having issues with the billet carrier, but you are better doing a search on the topic than trusting my memory. I am thinking the stock carrier bearing shown in my picture will do ok with the sliding rear shaft. By the way, if you are contemplating a transmission change, like a r4, where the drive shaft length will need to be changed, that is a great time to add the slider.
