As such, we always recommend that you seek help from experienced draught proofing and window fitting professionals. The biggest problem with old sash windows is draughts. As neglected timbers have shrunk over the years, gaps will have appeared and winter winds will roar through them into your house.
But there are plenty of DIY fixes you can apply to block out the draughts. The simplest sash window draught-proofing solution is to fix the window shut and fill the gaps with flexible filler. Check the putty around each pane too. Where it is loose, dig it out and reseal with fresh putty. A more practical DIY draught-proofing option is to use flexible draught excluder strips, which you just roll out and push into the gaps.
Adhesive sealer strip on the bottom and top frames will help the draught-proofing too. If you have a very high level of DIY skill, you can rout out the rebates and re-glaze the window with double-glazed panes. Another drawback with DIY draught-proofing is that you can over-seal your windows.
Make your windows completely air-tight and you will create the perfect environment for damp and mould to take hold. DIY methods like window draught tape or even a simple window sill draught snake can block out some of those cold air currents that make it almost impossible to feel warm in your own home in the winter.
The easiest DIY draught excluder to install is a sand-filled fabric draught snake. Just like the fabric snakes used for doors, you can place a window draught snake on the window sill to block some of the air currents coming in between the bottom of your window and the sill. For double hung windows, you can also use a second snake on the middle rail. And, of all the DIY options for draught proofing windows, snakes are the most decorative!
Another option is to install draught proofing strips. These strips are a foam material with one adhesive side. You can unroll the seal tape, cut it to size and attach it to the top, bottom and the sides of your window frame when the window is open.
Then, close the window and you should have a tighter seal. You can purchase foam tape at your hardware store or order it online. Beads, Weather Strips and Draught Excluders for Sash Windows There are literally hundreds of beads, weather strips and draught excluders on the market today and they come in a great array of styles, designs, materials and applications including compressions strips usually made from a foam-type substance or springy plastic material such as those available from Draftfix.
Draftfix sealing beads for draught proofing sash windows Some are designed for general draught proofing and can be used on sash windows while others have been designed specifically for sash windows such as those available from Exiseal.
Easiseal beads for draught proofing sash windows As you might imagine they all have varying degrees of success, some better than others but in most cases they inherently suffer from the same problems — if they are glued or stuck in place then they will eventually come loose and peel off and if they are nail or screw fixed then they will either damage the sash frame itself or look unsightly.
