Hi guys, Hope someone can help. Would that be within the guidelines of per processor licensing? SQL with 8 processors and not virtualization overhead though you do need to add some overhead for 3rd party device drivers will always outperform a 4-way virtual machine. But we're asking the wrong question.
If the utilization is very low, then virtualizing makes sense. If it's high, then virtualization will add overhead, not subtract. That said, there is a lot of information out there on virtualizing SQL databases on VMware, and I encourage you to Google it and take a look.
Then you have a level playing field, and the extra overhead of the virtualization layer may be outweighed by the increased portability and recoverability of virtual machines. This may not be the case in a one vm to one vmhost environment. However the comparison between a 4 virtual vs 8 core proc is quite large in disparity between processing power.
This becomes even more pronounced in a dual core server environment. I think it's important that this is really more of a licensing issue then a performance one, if I'm reading it right. The idea here is you have a dual quad-core system and want to run SQL with a processor license. You'd need to purchase TWO licenses. Of course you're still dropping from 8 effective CPU's down to 1 so performance wise you need to be able to take that hit.
Essentially you have purchase licenses for what the VM has configured, not what the physical box actually has.
The VM licensing is fine and it sees all the bare metal processors. Well this license is fine for a bare metal 2 proc quad core It remains free and retains the limitations of MSDE with respect to client connections and performance. It offers limited replication capabilities as well. Standard Edition introduces database mirroring and integration services.
